Every room in the home feels cohesive with a well-curated mix of textures and styles that come together seamlessly. Interior designer Katie Hodges ushers in organic modern design with a soft color palette of earth tones contrasted by unexpected pops of blacks and deep browns.
Sinuous Shapes & Style
The organic curves and neutral colors create a graceful setting with an expert blend of natural forms and modern design. Beautiful accent linens add comfort while creating balance alongside smooth and refined shapes.
This distinctive circular living room features a dramatic vaulted ceiling and offers a wrap-around view of the Santa Monica Mountains. Katie opted for sinuous forms for the sofa, lounge chair, coffee table, and rug to emphasize its elegant shape.
Katie highlights the deliberate tension between the room’s pristine sofa and lounge chair against the masculine vibe of the Sergio Rodrigues Moleca chair and ottoman. The chair style complements the room by breaking up the tailored elements and welcoming a casual, yet high-design feel to the space.
Katie shows how to masterfully pair antique and modern pieces for a captivating modern-traditional design that blends beautifully with elements of organic modern style. The vintage-inspired chair with its leather straps, wooden frame, and oversized cushions is a perfect complement to the on-trend, oversized curvy chairs, and sofa. The over-grouted stone interior wall speaks to one of our top trends you loved in 2022.
Moody Modern Light
One of the top standout features of the Highlands Project is the use of modern lighting throughout. From the oversized hanging light fixture in the dining room to the beautiful lighting in the entryway, these fixtures set the mood while providing a welcoming touch. Every corner of the home is illuminated in a way that enhances the overall design.
The entryway features a truly eclectic mix of pieces. A Pierre Jeanneret-style chair, African Senufo stools, an antique travertine table sourced from Fundamente in Rotterdam, and an oversized capiz shell ceiling light all work together to set the tone of this beautiful home upon entry.
A lariat-style central fixture by Apparatus, which doubles as an art installation, shines on the custom solid-oak table surrounded and oak-and-steel chairs. Underfoot lies a vintage rug from Mehraban selected for its casual sensibility.
Calming & Contrasting Colors
This calming color palette is the epitome of effortless elegance while the layered neutral tones along with a playful mix of textures create a cozy and inviting mood. The abundance of natural light is contrasted by the darker tones of the wood and black detailing for a grounded bedroom design.
Depth & Detail
Katie took her cues from the homeowners, a couple with a passion for fashion and art. An abstract, monochromatic work by artist Joelle Somero hangs above the living room’s curved sofa while the coffee table holds vintage ceramics from Galerie Provenance. These intricate works of art pop against the white walls covered in Benjamin Moore’s White Dove.
Breathtaking Balance
One of the first spaces Katie tackled was the primary bath. There, she placed a circular ceramic tub that echoes the shape of the bay where it rests. Above the tub is a hand-blown glass light inspired by the heart of the agave plant. The space is complete with an antique stool from Galerie Provenance.
In the powder bath, Katie incorporates limewash paint from Portola Paint & Glazes adding an aged quality to the powder room walls. The more traditional fixtures and furnishings, such as the unlacquered brass Waterworks faucet, the vintage limestone sink, and the antique Italian mirror, break from the rest of the home’s modern silhouettes for an unexpected modern traditional feel.
Ethereal Escape
Katie expertly toes the line of counterbalancing masculine and feminine forms to create an engaging tension followed by a wonderful release. Everything is a perfect balance of well-tailored design and casual, laid-back elegance. Added softness from plush linens, comforting textures, and oversized accent chairs make the Highlands Project an ethereal space for unwinding and rejuvenating.
